Anthropic has begun rolling out identity verification for certain use cases on Claude. This measure, aimed at preventing abuse and complying with policies and legal obligations, is conducted in partnership with the third-party provider Persona.
Anthropic is introducing an identity verification procedure for Claude users. A verification prompt may appear when accessing certain capabilities or as part of routine platform integrity checks.
The move is based on the principle that responsible use of powerful technology starts with knowing who is using it. Verification requires a valid government-issued photo ID and a device with a camera, typically taking under five minutes.
This measure reflects a broader trend toward enhancing safety and legal compliance in AI services. To protect privacy, ID and selfie data are processed and held by Persona, not Anthropic, and Anthropic states it will not use the verification data to train its models.
Community reactions are split. Some express concern that ID verification and potential blocking resemble past net neutrality debates, viewing it as an issue of 'AI neutrality' and unfair access control. Others argue that LLM providers are more like SaaS companies than infrastructure, pointing to the existence of open models and U.S. export controls, and suggest these restrictions may ultimately benefit overseas competitors.
